Conversations of a Life Economy

Over the last 18 months Kim Polman and Reboot the Future have been convening private ‘imaginal conversations’ with political leaders, top executives from the private sector, heads of nonprofits, well-known artists, and young activists. Again and again, these explorations opened up deep inner spaces and brought moments of transformation and insight. A powerful set of ‘values for a life economy’ have emerged, inspired by a new ecological formulation of the Golden Rule.

At the Climate Action Lab, these imaginal conversations are going public for the first time. Panelists will describe their transformative experiences, showing how moments of personal insight solidify the values that are essential for humans to live compassionately with each other and sustainably on this planet. They will then sketch concrete proposals for transformative action in response to the climate crisis, dialoguing together both with each other and with the audience.

The goal is that each listener will be moved and inspired by the insights of these well-known leaders, so that they too can present their personal narrative more powerfully -- from transformative experiences, through their deepest core values, and on to transformative action in the

The Columbia Climate School at COP26: Turning Ambition into Action

We’re at a critical juncture in the climate negotiating process, and one of the Climate School’s goals is to help a broader audience, especially students, understand what is happening at COP26 and what countries are bringing to the table. This year we have the unique opportunity to do this by connecting students in Glasgow and New York City with key leaders in energy and climate.

The Climate School is Columbia’s groundbreaking commitment to advance climate research, develop and deploy knowledge-based climate solutions, and empower the next generation of climate leaders, and this event will highlight the transformative role of the university to spur climate action.

Taking place at Glasgow’s University of Strathclyde, with the inaugural class of the Climate School’s students virtually participating from New York, the launch event coincides with a period of ambitious growth within the Climate School.

As Columbia seeks to maximize its impact in addressing climate change, the new Climate School brings together together many of its world-leading capabilities in climate including researchers and scholars at the Earth Institute, the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the Center on Global Energy Policy developing education, research, technology and policy hubs strategically linked and focused on the opportunities and needs for climate education, research and solutions.

Great Recovery Dialogue

In early 2021 a number of civil society groups came together to set out a collective vision for change, rooted in the lived experiences of millions of people at the frontlines of the struggle for climate and social justice. These collective demands were presented to the leaders of the G7 at their Summit in Cornwall in June and they are now being brought to COP26 to demand a more just and sustainable future for all.
